A Storybook Marland Mansion Wedding | Margaret & Carson

There’s something special about photographing a couple whose story is woven into the very ground they’re standing on. When Margaret and Carson exchanged vows at The Marland Mansion in Ponca City, Oklahoma, they weren’t just choosing a beautiful venue, they were stepping into a piece of their own family history. As an Oklahoma wedding photographer, I’ve had the honor of capturing a lot of love stories, but few have felt as full-circle as this one.

A Love Story Rooted in Ponca City

Margaret and Carson’s story actually begins a generation earlier. Their fathers were childhood friends growing up together in Ponca City, yet somehow Margaret and Carson had never crossed paths until 2022, when their dads ran into each other at an Oklahoma State Dad’s Day football game. That chance reunion is where it all started. Margaret remembers seeing Carson and thinking he was cute, and not long after, Carson got her number from her dad and asked her to coffee.

That first date came with a small wardrobe mix-up. “I showed up in athletic clothes thinking it was just coffee, while Carson showed up dressed for an actual date — I clearly missed the memo!” Margaret laughed. But the mismatched outfits didn’t matter once they started talking. “We ended up talking for hours, and after that we were pretty much inseparable.” Whether it was studying together, hanging out, or taking late-night drives, they simply always wanted to be near each other. Carson quickly became Margaret’s best friend, and she says they both knew early on this was it.

A Wedding That Told Their Story

When it came time to plan the wedding, Margaret leaned into who she’s always been — a creative at heart with a love for classic, timeless celebrations. “I’ve always been an extremely creative person and have always loved classic, timeless weddings,” she shared. “From the beginning, I wanted to be able to look back at our photos years from now and feel like our wedding told the story of Carson and me, rather than just reflecting what was trending at the time.”

That philosophy is exactly why The Marland Mansion felt like the only choice. Both Margaret and Carson’s families have deep roots in Kay County. Their parents grew up there and attended proms at the Mansion, and remarkably, Carson’s parents were married in the very same garden where Margaret and Carson said “I do.” As Margaret put it, “The history and character of the Mansion meant we didn’t need to transform the space; I wanted the venue itself to be part of the design.” For anyone dreaming of a Marland Mansion wedding, that’s really the heart of it — the estate doesn’t need much dressing up. It already tells a story.

From there, Margaret built out a classic white and green palette with an old-money, timeless elegance, softened by a few modern touches. Working closely with her florist at The Flower Shop Pryor to select the right vessels, greenery, and blooms became a central part of bringing that vision to life. Margaret also wanted one meaningful pop of color woven through the day, so her bridesmaids, her mom, and her mother-in-law became her “something blue.”

Margaret’s Inspiration and Advice

She’ll be the first to tell you that Pinterest was a helpful tool for gathering inspiration, but she made a point not to let it take over. “One thing I reminded myself throughout planning was to take a breath and plan our day,” she said. “Social media is wonderful for inspiration, but your wedding doesn’t have to look exactly like someone else’s to be beautiful. It will be magical because it represents the two of you.”

Since Margaret and Carson were living in Texas while planning a wedding back home in Oklahoma, bringing on a wedding planner was one of the smartest decisions they made. Harper Mae Events handled the coordination and logistics so Margaret didn’t have to worry about a single detail of setup on the big day. “When the wedding day finally came, I was able to be completely present, enjoy every moment, and watch the vision we had spent so long creating come to life.”

The Moment That Meant the Most

Ask any couple about their wedding day and they’ll usually land on one moment that outshines the rest. For Margaret, it was standing at the altar with Carson, listening to Pastor Larry pray over them just before they exchanged rings. “During the prayer, Carson and I looked up at each other and locked eyes. It was such a sweet moment when everything felt still, quiet and perfect.”

She described the feeling of that instant beautifully: “At the end of the day, it was just the two of us. We had made it through everything, and we were only seconds away from being married. It felt so perfect and meaningful.” As their photographer, being trusted to capture that exact breath of stillness is exactly why I love this work. “I also love that Leslee captured that moment,” Margaret said. “I smile every time I see the photo because it brings me right back to how sweet and special that little moment was.” Honestly, moments like that are the whole reason I do this.

Margaret’s Advice for Couples Choosing a Photographer

When I asked Margaret what advice she’d give other couples searching for the right wedding photographer, her answer was simple but important: get to know each other first. “I think it’s really helpful to meet your photographer and do an engagement or couples session before the wedding. You obviously want to love their work, but it’s just as important to make sure you connect with them and feel comfortable together.”

Margaret and Carson did exactly that, meeting up for a couples session in Tulsa, Oklahoma several months before their wedding. “It gave us a chance to get to know Leslee and for her to get to know us as a couple. We both left that shoot feeling so at peace and excited going into the wedding because we knew we loved her work and, just as importantly, loved our vibe together.”

By the time the wedding arrived, that early connection made all the difference. “We felt completely comfortable having Leslee there to capture such personal moments. I truly think that comfort shows in our photos. They feel like us because we were able to relax, be ourselves and genuinely enjoy the day, knowing we completely trusted the person behind the camera.”

That trust is everything to me, and it’s what I hope every couple feels — whether they’re getting married in a mansion garden in Ponca City or anywhere else across the state.
